Playing Poker Is Not A Job

November 27, ‘07

It seems I keep bumping into people who tell me they are professional poker players. I almost have to laugh when I hear this. I’m not an idiot. I don’t care what you think, what you see on TV or what your friends say. Playing poker is not a way to earn a living. Ever since the World Poker Tour and that hot bitch Shana Hiatt hit the airwaves, everyone and their grandma are now claiming they are a professional poker player. The fact is, 99.999% of those making that claim are broke as a joke. Even lots of the true professionals you see on TV go broke from time to time. Mike “The Mouth” Matusow has been flat broke busted at least twice. The odds of you earning a living from playing poker are less than the odds of you becoming a Hollywood celebrity. The odds of you making a fortune with a website and Adsense are about 100X greater than making one red cent playing poker.

How many professional poker players on TV do you see living in a big houses and have nice cars? Almost NONE. Why is that? Because poker is not a job. Those that do make serious money playing poker make their money from selling books, endorcements or some partnership with a poker site. Unless you are doing one of the three, you’re not making money from poker.

Your time, money, and effort are better spent trying to build an empire. So guys, please stop with the “I’m a professional poker player” lines. It’s starting to get on my nerves. My 14 year old nephew is probably making more with his website than you are by playing poker.
